What type of Europeans immigrated to the USA in the early days?
Q. Was it mostly poor Europeans, rich Europeans? More educated, less educated? More intelligent, less intelligent? I would guess they were more risk takers and adventurous types seeing as back then it was very difficult to get to the USA with their type of transport. Were the first Europeans in the USA more intelligent than the average European?
Asked by Lover - Sat Feb 19 13:35:00 2011 - History - 6 Answers - Comments
A. Until the early 20th century European social structure made it almost impossible for a talented peasant to rise above their station. This encouraged the socially disadvantaged to move to America where anyone could own land, become rich and give a better life to their children then that offered in Europe. I wouldn't say the immigrants to America were more intelligent then those who chose to stay behind. They were more aggressive and eager to improve their lives, and the lives of the descendants.

How does the USA protect its national secretes with so many different cultures?
Q. During WW2 Franklin D. Roosevelt said that the USA could not enter the war because his country was made from so many different nations that is would be difficult for them to take sides. Now the USA is made up from more nations from across the globe. Recently there have been many leaks to China, India and probably even European countries. How does the USA protect its national secretes and do you have to be a second generation immigrant to have access to secretes or does it even matter? I meant secrets before anyone mentions it.

A. Konnichi wa Miyagi-san, Since WWII the US has a more involved method of determining just "who" is granted a security access to classified materials. Access is granted on a need to know basis. If one has any questionable information in their background they are not granted a security clearance. With today's technology it is much easier to know about people's reliability and whether to grant them access to classified material. Best wishes, Larry Smith Senior Master Sergeant, USAF (Ret.) How is Chinese food different in the USA than in China?
Q. I've heard that chinese food is different in taste/look in the USA than in China. Does anyone know what the primary differences are? And are theyre any differences in restaurant environment in a restaurant in the USA in comparison to a restaurant in China?
Asked by Mr_ICON - Wed Jul 25 09:38:45 2007 - Ethnic Cuisine - 21 Answers - Comments
A. There are 3 major differences between Chinese food in America and authentic Chinese food in China: Ingredients, Spices, and method of preparation. Ingredients - Some ingredients are just not readily available in America. Often times they are not as fresh, sometimes it is cheaper to use local American ingredients, but sometimes you simply can't get them in the US. So restaurants replace Chinese broccoli with regular broccoli, use regular pork instead of Chinese smoked ham, use regular cooking wine instead of Chinese sorghum wine. Spices - Authentc Chinese food is filled with rich flavor and aroma. But the spices can be a bit too foreign for the common customers in America so restaurants dumb things down. They use a lot less shallots, ginger, [cont.]

How does the USA check if foreigners marriage to a US citizen is genuine?
Q. This is out of total curiosity, I have no plans on doing this. But to prevent people from just marrying a citizen to get into the country (I believe this is fraud), it says the USA will check to see if the marriage is genuine. How do they do this?

A. Rent the movie "Greencard" to see the feds in action (good movie, too). Actually, they can be quite thorough. They interview each spouse separately and ask a slew of questions concerning the other spouse. Questions that a real spouse would know, but that a spouse of convenience would not. Like where did your spouse go to school; what's his/her favorite perfume/after shave; how, where and when did you meet. They interview family members, friends and employers. They talk to the neighbors. They then collate all the material, sift through it and check for inaccuracies or for stories that are so identical that they seem rehearsed. They are also more suspicious of marriages where the foreign spouse is from a country where emigrating to… [cont.]

How to locate communities in the USA with multiple colleges and universities?
Q. I'm researching places to live based on housing costs, scenic beauty, and university atmosphere. I've already found good websites for researching the first three criteria. However, is there a website that lists cities and towns in the USA that have more than one college or university, not including community colleges? I'd like to easily cross-reference my sources for real estate and scenic beauty with a listing of "college towns".

Please compare this to Division I travel teams and Top 25 College Soccer Teams. Soccer is the least appreciated sport in America, and I don't want to play for a club that gets 100 fans a game... How to tell if 2010 USA World Cup jersey is authentic or Fake?
Q. The Official jersey is made by Nike and is the Dri-Fit material. The USA crest and the "authentic" black tag are sewn/stitched. What about the 2010 FIFA patch on the right sleeve? (sewn patch or other) Is there anything else to look for?
Asked by calshamus - Wed Jun 23 20:33:23 2010 - 2006 FIFA World Cup(TM) - 3 Answers - Comments
A. I think you've got it all there - the crucial thing is that it features all the correct labels and the correct markings on the shirt itself. In my experience the fake jerseys are generally poorly cut, and do not include any or all of the markings (manufacturer's logo, country logo, etc). The biggest giveaway will be the price - the genuine article is relatively expensive. If you see cheap jerseys which are "new" then odds-on they are fake. Safest bet is to buy from a reputable, physical store rather than online.
