Brazil

Brazil / b r ə ˈ z ɪ l / (Portuguese: Brasil, IPA: [bɾaˈziw]), officially the Federative Republic of Brazil (Portuguese: República Federativa do Brasil, listen (help·info)), is the largest country in South America. It is the world's fifth largest country, both by geographical area and by population with over 192 million people. It is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas and the largest lusophone country in the world.

Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of 7,491 km (4,655 mi). It is bordered on the north by Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and the French overseas region of French Guiana; on the northwest by Colombia; on the west by Bolivia and Peru; on the southwest by Argentina and Paraguay and on the south by Uruguay. Numerous archipelagos form part of Brazilian territory, such as Fernando de Noronha, Rocas Atoll, Saint Peter and Paul Rocks, and Trindade and Martim Vaz. It borders all other South American countries except Ecuador and Chile.

Brazil was a colony of Portugal from the landing of Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500 until 1815, when it was elevated to the rank of kingdom and the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves was formed. The colonial bond was in fact broken in 1808, when the capital of the Portuguese colonial Empire was transferred from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, after Napoleon invaded Portugal. Independence was achieved in 1822 with the formation of the Empire of Brazil, a unitary state governed under a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary system. The country became a presidential republic in 1889, when a military coup d'état proclaimed the Republic, although the bicameral legislature, now called Congress, dates back to the ratification of the first constitution in 1824. Its current Constitution, formulated in 1988, defines Brazil as a Federal Republic. The Federation is formed by the union of the Federal District, the 26 States, and the 5,564 Municipalities.

The Brazilian economy is the world's sixth largest by nominal GDP and the seventh largest by purchasing power parity. Brazil is one of the world's fastest growing major economies. Economic reforms have given the country new international recognition. Brazil is a founding member of the United Nations, the G20, CPLP, Latin Union, the Organization of Ibero-American States, the Organization of American States, Mercosul and the Union of South American Nations, and is one of the BRIC countries. Brazil is also home to diverse wildlife, natural environments, and extensive natural resources in a variety of protected habitats.

  • I think an interpreter has to sing everything, to sing what wants to sing. It cannot be with that foolishness, that here in Brazil we face this thing that when one records a song, later no one can rerecord it. This is madness, absurd. Music doesn't have an owner, the music doesn´t belong to anyone.

How many percent of the brazilian girls in Brazil wear a thong bikini?
Q. When I see videoclips or movies about Brazil, it looks like 90% of the girls there are wearing a thong bikini.. For all the people who've been there; is that true or is it in real life a lot less? I'm just curious about it :) Thanks!

How will Brazil sustain its economy without deforestation?
Q. What I mean is what can Brazil do for the economy without deforestation? What is their government's plan?
Asked by helpme - Sun Oct 10 10:53:34 2010 - Economics - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Don't worry. Brazil don't depends of woods for its economy. It depends of human labor. Brazil is a world example of ecological programs. Brazil is world champion in recycling. By the way, Dilma is an excelent candidate for president. Marina also, but she don't run anymore. Serra is a bad choice. He would bring back all problems Brazil had with Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Serra is even worst than his pal FHC. Lula deserves a Nobel of peace for: - Fighting against hunger in Brazil; - Humanity aid in Haiti and other countries; - Keeping peace in South America by using diplomacy; - Efforts in Middle East for a peace deal.

A documentary on Brazilian samba music and its effects on Brazilian culture, the spirit of samba is a rousing film that features a number of exuberant performances from some of Brazil`s greatest samba artists. Though many outside of Brazil know samba and bossa nova through the works of crossover artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, the music has deep roots in Brazilian culture and history, which are detailed here. From the hilltop ghettos of Rio to the African rooted region of Bahia, the spirit of samba makes a complete survey of one of Brazil`s national treasures. Features performances by Gilberto Gil and Chico Barque.
