Peru (pronounced /pəˈru/ ( listen); Spanish: Perú, Quechua: Piruw, Aymara: Piruw), officially the Republic of Peru (Spanish: República del Perú, pronounced [reˈpuβlika ðel peˈɾu] ( listen)), is a country in western South America. It is bordered on the north by Ecuador and Colombia, on the east by Brazil, on the southeast by Bolivia, on the south by Chile, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.

Peruvian territory was home to the Norte Chico civilization, one of the oldest in the world, and to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty, which included most of its South American colonies. After achieving independence in 1821, Peru has undergone periods of political unrest and fiscal crisis as well as periods of stability and economic upswing.

Peru is a representative democratic republic divided into 25 regions. Its geography varies from the arid plains of the Pacific coast to the peaks of the Andes mountains and the tropical forests of the Amazon Basin. It is a country with a high Human Development Index score and a poverty level around 34%. Its main economic activities include agriculture, fishing, mining, and manufacturing (e.g. textiles).

The Peruvian population, estimated at 29 million, is multiethnic, including Amerindians, Europeans, Africans, and Asians. The main spoken language is Spanish, although a significant number of Peruvians speak Quechua or other native languages. This mixture of cultural traditions has resulted in a wide diversity of expressions in fields such as art, cuisine, literature, and music.

How long does it take to cross the Amazon from Brazil to Peru?
Q. I am planning to visit Brazil and hopefully see the Amazon. I am looking at travelling to Peru from there to go on the Inca trail. How long will it take to go via the Amazon..Am I better to fly into La Paz in Bolivia and make my way across the border there?
Asked by Kate T - Tue Aug 1 15:52:13 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Best bet would be to fly to La Paz. There is still a lot of jungle to cross when you get to Peru. The whole Northeast corner of Peru is jungle. I assume that it would probably take at least 2 weeks to go by way of the Amazon, but don't quote me on that . I am just trying to think of the travel videos I saw. I am not sure where you get off the Amazon into another tributary in Peru and then to what town. The road system in that area of Peru is not very good. My wife's friend lives in that area and she has to fly in to get home. So, go to Bolivia after you have seen the Amazon, then pick up the Inca Trail there. Have a great time. I envy you.

How does the El Nino Current affect the fishing industry of Peru?
Q. Please site any sources used. Spanish sources would be helpful as well. I want to know how El Nino affects the fishing industry of Peru. I have heard there are many different ways of how El nino affects peru, and it influences many aspects of Peruvian life. Thank you for your help.

A. My short answer will be that as El Nino current is a warm current, fish which normally live in cold currents (Humboldt current in Peru) will not live and breed and the industry will fall. Plankton dies, marine species too due to the change in water temp. If you want more info, just look in either wiki or google.

What region of Peru is Camotillo from, and what is any other info about this dessert?
Q. Hi! I'm making Camotillo, which is a Peruvian sweet potato dessert. I need to write a short paragraph on it. I've been scouring the the web, and I can't find much info on it, except that it's from Peru. I need to know which region of Peru it's from, when it's typically eaten, and any info about traditions associated with this dessert. I've tried a few search engines, and many key words. Please help! Thank you so much in advance!

A. camotillo is not only from Peru or from a specific region, we have camotillo in Bolivia and most of the valley and Andes cities have this potato in their diets! I like them baked with marshmallows and Cinnamon in the top. You just boil them (2 pound), smash the boiled camotillos, mix them with 1/2 cup of heavy cream, dash of orange peal a dash of salt, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, sugar to taste ( I like splenda better) a dash of nutmeg . Mix all the ingredients, and bake them in a 300 F oven for 45 min topped with marshmallows and ground Cinnamon. Broil the top for a bit before serving! this dish is not only great as dessert but it is a good side for roasted meats. some kind of sweet mashed potatoes dish. Camotillos are harvested in… [cont.]
