What is this world of ours? ... a fleeting symmetry; a momentary order. Watch out for the fellow who talks about putting things in order! Pithy sentences are like sharp nails which force truth upon our memory. It is very important not to mistake hemlock for parsley; but not at all so to believe or not in God. There are things I can't force. I must adjust. There are times when the greatest change needed is a change of my viewpoint.

Philosophical Thoughts (1746)
One may demand of me that I should seek truth, but not that I should find it. L'Encyclopédie_(1751_-_1766)">

L'Encyclopédie (1751 - 1766)

First published 1751 - 1766, revised in 1772, 1777 and 1780
Reason is to the philosopher what grace is to the Christian... The philosopher forms his principles on an infinity of particular observations. ... The philosophical spirit is thus a spirit of observation and accuracy.
