How did Alabama football team get there mascot the elephant?
Q. Because I don't really picture Alabama an elephant. It's so weird I want to know how it happened.
Asked by Seph R - Sun Nov 9 08:43:09 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In the 1930 Alabama-Ole Miss game, Coach Wallace Wade started his second string in the first quarter. They were still bigger than the Mississippi first string but Ole Miss was hanging tough. Sports writer Everett Strupper, of the Atlanta Journal, wrote "At the end of the (first) quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity." Several other writers referred to the Alabama linemen Red Elephants and the name stuck. That is how Alabama came to be associated with elephants. Now, the Crimson Tide mascot is an elephant fittingly named Big Al.

A. Where are you from? Alabama is a state in the United States of America. Its eastern border is mainly the Chattahoochee River, which separates it from the State of Georgia. On the north is Tennessee, and on the west is the state of Mississippi. These are other states, not nations. The Gulf of Mexico is the southern border, giving sea access to Mobile, Alabama. OK?

A. If his name is on your son's birth certificate, then you can just file. If his name is not on the birth certificate, you'll have to get a paternity test. Once you have proof that he's the father (cause there is no marriage) then you can file for child support. You'll need to have an attorney file the paperwork with the court. The amount of support is based on the income of both of the parents. There are certain percentages based on your income compared to his etc... For example if he earns more than you then the percentage he pays will be higher. Either way he's going to pay something. You can also make the support retroactive to the time when he "abandoned" his child (left the home) or if he never lived with you then you can make it… [cont.]

Is there any truth to the Alabama stereotypes?
Q. I'm from Toronto, Canada and I'm considering attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham. It seems like a good university and has the majors I'm interested in and Birmingham looks like a nice city, but I can't help but think about the stereotypes of Alabama. Is it true that the majority of people in Alabama are conservative Christians, and is it true that there is still a lot of noticeable racial tension in Alabama? I know that most stereotypes are usually false, but so many people say that Alabama is the real deal when it comes to stereotypes of the south. Is it really as bad as people make it out to be?

A. We moved here from Chicago five years ago. When I flew down for my interview, my wife practically had to be forced onto the plane at gunpoint. Now I wouldn't be able to get her to leave. Dispense with all the cliches. Birmingham is a great city with lots of entertainment (an astonishingly good music scene, if that's your deal), amazingly good restaurants, and a generally fun atmosphere. Plus, if you go out of your way to make friends (which is what you should do in any move, but in the South its particularly important), you'll have a great stay here. The race thing just doesn't seem to be much of an issue in Birmingham, at least no more than any other major city. In fact, I see far less overt racism here than I witnessed in Chicago. … [cont.]

Grad student in Alabama needing a student loan to pay bills. How much can I borrow?
Q. I live in SC, but will attend Auburn in Alabama. Probably I'll get an assistantship which will give me an out of state waiver. I know that when you get a student loan, they allow you to borrow up to the full cost of tuition, right? Well, will I be able to borrow the out of state cost, so that I can use the extra to pay for personal bills?

A. It depends on your finances before grad school and how many hours you are taking, but I was staying in state and got like $15,000 or $20,000 a year as a grad student. The feds decide how much you're eligible for but your school decides how much to give you.

A. I used to work in hotels and the legal age to rent a room is 18. However hotel chains can set their own minimum age requirements. There are a lot of hotels (mainly major chains and in places like Myrtle Beach) that will require you to be 21. Most hotels will require a major credit card for the reservation and for the deposit during your stay. do not use your debit card!!! Here is why, you can pay with cash even though you used the credit card for your reservation and your deposit however they pre-authorize the card and put a hold on the amount of the stay and the deposit. They do not charge the card however the bank/credit card company will hold that amount and you cannot spend the money. If you use your debit card that could… [cont.]

A. I had a very fundamentalist man tell me in the 1970s that there was not a Catholic Church in Atlanta. Obviously, he had not been around Atlanta. But that ain't Alabama. Basically Alabama would be considered Protestant in that era, but that would include virtually everything from high end Episcopalian to Snake Handlers in N. Alabama. My father's family was from Alabama and they were Methodist. A lot of it would depend on where in Alabama you are talking about - some denominations were more influential than others in specific areas. I would think that the Baptist held the main road, however. Mobile is full of Catholics and there would have been plenty in the larger cities. There is also and has been for a long time, a large number… [cont.]

How do we find out our property lines/boundaries for our home in Alabama?
Q. We bought a house in Madison, Alabama (just outside of Huntsville) a little over a year ago and are now planning to fence in the backyard. The only problem is that we don't know exactly where our property lines are and obviously need this information to give the fencing company before construction can begin. I have no idea who to contact or where to go to find out our plot's exact measurements and I was hoping that somebody on here could point me in the right direction. Thank you!
Asked by cygnet611 - Tue Dec 29 13:50:04 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hire a survey company to mark your boundaries. Cost about $400. Found out my a$$hole neighbor put his fence 1.5 ft inside my property line. He's in construction and should have known better. Now there is a property lien against his house and he can't sell it until he removes the fence. So, make sure your surveyor knows his stuff. They can measure (using GPS) down to fractions of an inch. You may even be able to locate your property markers yourself. On my property there are 2' rebar at each corner of my lot that were planted below the surface of the ground (within city limits) that were placed there when the development was built.

How many pets can you legally own in Alabama?
Q. If you have a roommate do you have to split the number of animals between the two people? I can't find the answer for Alabama specifically. Anybody know the answer? You think we could have 4 dogs and my 2 cats in a house?
Asked by Bensonmum - Tue Jan 26 01:22:34 2010 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. You can't find the answer because you're looking for the whole state. It doesn't work that way. It's a township code. Look up your Town Clerk's site and go into search from there. You should be able to find it. It really depends on your township how many you're allowed. And as far as I know, unless you split the property into a duplex, then all animals are in the one residence... .That's all they care about... Not who owns what. They only care about the amount.
