Patriotism is love and devotion to one's country. The word comes from the Greek patris, meaning fatherland. However, patriotism has had different meanings over time, and its meaning is highly dependent upon context, geography, and philosophy.

Although patriotism is used in certain vernaculars as a synonym for nationalism, nationalism is not necessarily considered an inherent part of patriotism. Among the ancient Greeks, patriotism consisted of notions concerning language, religious traditions, ethics, law, and devotion to the common good, rather than pure identification with a nation-state. Scholar J. Peter Euben writes that for the Greek philosopher Socrates, "patriotism does not require one to agree with everything that his country does and would actually promote analytical questioning in a quest to make the country the best it possibly can be."

In the Hindu epic Ramayana, Lord Rama tells Lakshmana Janani Janma Bhoomischa Swargadapi Gariyasi (Mother and Motherland are greater than heaven), which greatly lays the foundation for consciousness of patriotism for Hindus.

During the 18th century Age of Enlightenment, the notion of patriotism continued to be separate from the notion of nationalism. Instead, patriotism was defined as devotion to humanity and beneficence. For example, providing charity, criticizing slavery, and denouncing excessive penal laws were all considered patriotic. In both ancient and modern visions of patriotism, individual responsibility to fellow citizens is an inherent component of patriotism.

Many contemporary notions of patriotism are influenced by 19th century ideas about nationalism. During the 19th century, "being patriotic" became increasingly conflated with nationalism and even jingoism. However, some notions of contemporary patriotism reject nationalism in favour of a more classic version of the idea of patriotism which includes social responsibility.

Whats the difference between Nationalism and Patriotism?
Q. How is patriotism not related to terrorism? I need this for a debate so please help!

A. Patriotism can be defined simply as 'love and loyal support of one's country'. Yes, it's centered in feeling and, as we've seen in past weeks, the emotion is deep and intense. But when people take patriotism to a fanatic extreme, this is usually called nationalism. (The terms jingoism and chauvinism are near synonyms.) Nationalism is more centered in thought than in feeling; it's actually a political and social philosophy. The Columbia Encyclopedia defines it as "a collective state of mind or consciousness in which people believe their primary duty and loyalty is to the nation-state. Often nationalism implies national superiority and glorifies various national virtues. Thus love of nation may be overemphasized; concern with national… [cont.]

Is patriotism a defining human trait or is it an artificial construction of control?
Q. I am not patriotic but i try to love people (it is not always easy). What use does patriotism have for cultures that seek to expand internationalism and understanding, forge mutual goals and bring down social divides? I can't image that people a million years from now would even know what the USA was or the UK (where I'm from) for that matter. Hoping for a better world...

Does America simply put too much patriotism into its economic thinking?
Q. How does "Made in the U. S. A." decend into "go shopping" ? People say the soldiers and Marines we send overseas are our heroes. Why does it sound like the multi-million CEOs are the real heroes? Does the American economic attitude even make sense? Is CEO-worship a form of American religion or something? Someone please help me understand that. Some people develop enthusiasm and ideas about UFOs. I can sort of understand people doing that. But CEOs? What generates that? Does it have to do with putting some abundance of patriotism into things, or something else?

A. I think we have distorted our ideas of what is America. We have listened to Rush Limbaugh too much, and your neighbor who has 2 jobs and is barely making ends meet too little. We equate wealth with happiness, and that has turned into greed. Happiness comes from being able to have a comfortable life, and the freedom to make choices that can better that life. Average Americans have fewer and fewer choices, as there are fewer and fewer opportunities. Bush has created the most billionaires and the most homeless.

One is generous and humane, the other narrowly egotistical; one is self-critical, the other self-righteous; one is sensible, the other romantic; one is good-humored, the other solemn; one is inquiring, the other pontificating; one is moderate, the other filled with passionate intensity; one is judicious and the other arrogant in the use of great power.
  • It should be the work of a genuine and noble patriotism to raise the life of the nation to the level of its privileges; to harmonize its general practice with its abstract principles; to reduce to actual facts the ideals of its institutions; to elevate instruction into knowledge; to deepen knowledge into wisdom; to render knowledge and wisdom complete in righteousness; and to make the love of country perfect in the love of man.
